Qingming Colour Palette清明节

Tender spring purples, greens and blossom tones for early April

清明节, Qingming or Pure Brightness, sits in early April and is the year's most quietly emotional festival: families sweep graves and remember the dead, then walk out into the new green of spring. That double meaning is the design key — a festival of mourning held inside a season of rebirth.

The palette follows the three spring solar terms around it. 清明 gives the deep, dusty purples of willow and twilight; 春分 is almost colourless, a set of near-whites, greys and dry straw tones; 谷雨 adds the soft violets and lilacs of late-spring blossom. Together they read as gentle and low-key rather than festive, which is exactly right.

For a foreign designer this is a festival to keep restrained. Bright red and loud gold feel wrong here — they belong to New Year and weddings. Pale greens, quiet purples and muted pinks are safe and appropriate for Qingming comms. Avoid treating the grave-sweeping itself as decorative, and avoid jokes about death or ghosts, since the tone is remembrance. Qingming also overlaps with a public holiday and a travel peak, so campaigns usually run earlier, in the soft-purple register of late spring.

Cultural noteKeep it restrained — bright red and loud gold belong to New Year and weddings. Don't decorate the grave-sweeping itself; avoid death/ghost humour.
