Solar term
清明 · Pure Brightness — "清明时节雨纷纷,路上行人欲断魂。"
Imagery
“Qi” refers to the ancient state famed for its purple dye. A true, deep violet, the classical Chinese purple of rank.
Origin
Qi purple was proverbial — the colour a state grew rich on. As Pure Brightness’ turning colour it names the canonical violet that all later purples answer to: neither red-tinged nor blue-tinged, but the balance the term’s four purples orbit.
