Autumn Harvest Colour Palette秋收

Ambers, straws and deep brass for the harvest and late autumn

秋收, the autumn harvest, is the quiet workhorse season of the Chinese calendar: grain in, fruit ripe, the light golden and low. Its colours come straight from the middle solar terms — 白露 (White Dew) with its cream-and-rice yellows, 秋分 (Autumn Equinox) with dry greens — and from the classical palette of amber, straw and brass: 琥珀, 缃色, 秋香色, 赭石, 驼色.

The register is warm, dry and mature. Where summer is green and Spring Festival is red, the harvest is gold and brown: think wheat, sandalwood, toasted grain, old paper. It is the natural palette for food, tea, spirits and any brand that wants to feel earthy and considered rather than loud.

Design advice: keep browns from turning grey by pairing them with a clean light neutral — a warm ivory or 素色 — and let a single amber or deep yellow be the highlight. Too many near-identical tans and the page goes flat. The harvest season carries almost no ritual taboo, which makes it unusually easy for foreign brands: white and black here read simply as paper and ink rather than mourning, because the context is agriculture and food rather than celebration.

Cultural notePair the browns with a light neutral so they don't grey out, and keep one amber as the highlight — too many tans go flat.
