Imagery

“Quàn” is a red obtained at the first dip of the dye-bath; “yuán” is a border or hem. The colour of such a red used as trim.

Origin

The Rites of Zhou specify the pale-red edging for certain robes. As Major Snow’s succeeding colour it is a red of strict measure — dye counted by dips — shown here not as a field but as a line around one.
