Imagery

The name plays on “picking up the purple” — the purple robe of high rank — as easily as picking up a mustard seed.

Origin

Purple was the robe of senior officials, and to “pick up purple” was to rise suddenly in the world. As the turning colour it is a dark, dense violet — rank and its weight, at the floor of the coldest term.
